Better Together
Friday 24 February 2023
83 Dalston Lane, London (map)
February is the border between winter and spring and though it is a short month the days can seem long and lonely. So we came together to eat and we beat those February Blues. The evening was such a tonic for us all. As always, guests mingled, chatted, laughed, swapped numbers and created a huge buzz.
About the event
Andi and the kitchen team cooked up a storm and turned the ingredients donated by City Harvest into a gourmet feast.
L and D came with C from the Single Homeless Project. They are formerly homeless young men and despite their difficulties both are bright teenagers with hope for the future. L had never eaten Salmon before and Sally persuaded him to try it. He did and enjoyed a second helping of the chowder. They had a lovely time.
C is a full time career for her 38 year old son who was brain damaged at birth, and so had very specific special needs. She came to Mike’s Table with her eldest daughter K, her ‘angel’, leaving her youngest to look after everything at home. C was nervous about coming, worried about leaving her son, and yet for a few hours she took time out to really enjoy herself. She tried every course, liking some more than others, she talked to every one commenting that it was so great to meet people for so many cultures and walks of life. She couldn’t stop smiling and gave us all a huge hug when she left.
U found us on Instagram, loved the idea and bought a ticket. He mixed with all the guests at his table, and just like C, he enjoyed meeting new and interesting people from such different backgrounds. It was great to meet him.
J is a highly intelligent man who beams radiance and calm. He’s suffered so many misfortunes and find his new life in the UK quite isolating, especially as he’s not allowed to work, but he is so positive about everything and fantastic company. He’s such an inspiration.
