About the event

83 Dalston Lane is cosy and confortable with a bo-ho bistro vibe and immediately makes you feel calm and at ease. No ice breaker excercises or intros were needed as each of our 18 guest schose a seat and stuck up friendly conversation with their neigbour, often a complete stranger. Connections were made and new friendships born.

Guests who are invited through our charity partners often research Mike’s Table, keen to know what they are letting themselves in for. Their understanding of our mission is amazing and their compassion for why we started is so touching. These are people who have a myriad of troubles and difficulties most of us can’t comprehend and yet they have such energy and verve. (A night at a Holiday Inn can be lovely but living there for 22 months is no holiday; yet this is the experience of many refugees who enter the UK often traumatised by war or oppression) It’s always a privillage and an inspiration to meet them.

 
 

The menu was creatively devised on the night by Andi and Claire using surplus food kindly donated by City Harvest. They are very talented, professional chefs who graciously volunteer their time and talent. Claire pointed out that it was her fifth anniversay at Mike’s Table - time flies! Each dish wowed the crowd. Soup sounds quite everyday and yet it was so elevated that we heard cries of “I’m in paradise”, “and this is just the starter!” and “I didn’t think English food could be so tasty”.

We planned to talk about the theme of the night, Care and Share, but the evening itself beame the epitome of the title. We all shared a truly positive experience. As one shy guest was leaving she put her head around the kitchen door to offer her thanks. Her parting words: “I will remember this night for the rest of my life.”

Red Vermouth and Soda OR High Point Ruby Aperitif with Tonic

Starter:
Pumpkin and Ginger Soup with Black Chickpeas, Crumbled Feta and Basil Oil

Mains:
Herb Crusted Cod Fillet with Romesco Sauce OR Whole Cauliflower roasted with Yogurt and Harissa
served with sharing sides of Patatas Barvos and a warm salad of Courgettes, Leeks, Baby Leaves and Micro Herbs

Desert:
Pear and Polenta Cake with whipped Vanilla Cream
